This summer more than a dozen Vashon farmers and gardeners are experimenting with growing sweetpotatoes. The Sweetpotato Field Day will provide an opportunity to learn about the latest WSU research on varieties and techniques, and to hear from islanders who’ve successfully propagated and grown the crop. Following an introductory session at Gracie’s Greens, participants will have an opportunity to visit island gardeners experimenting with growing sweetpotatoes on Vashon Island.
3:00-4:00 PM Introduction to Growing Sweetpotatoes
Laurel Moulton, WSU Extension, will report on the latest sweetpotato trials at WSU
Mount Vernon and the results of farmers growing different varieties in the maritime
region.
Selena Ligrano, Peak Moon Nursery, will
share her experience propagating
sweetpotato slips and the feedback she's
gotten from Vashon growers.
Zoe Marzluff, Gracie’s Greens, will talk
about the results of her experience with
large scale sweetpotato production, with
comments on soils, irrigation, curing, and
marketing.
4:00-6:00 – Garden Tours
Following the gathering at Gracie’s
Greens, field day participants are invited to
visit the gardens of islanders
experimenting with growing sweetpotatoes
to see their plantings and learn from their
experience.
